Zero Waste

Campus Race to Zero Waste Participant

Zero Waste by 2035

The College of Charleston has a goal to reach zero waste by 2035. Zero Waste, as defined by the Zero Waste International Alliance, is "the conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.”
Please visit zerowaste.cofc.edu for our most in-depth information on how you can help us reach this goal. You'll find information on recycling, zero waste events, composting and more.

This is a snapshot of our current waste diversion on campus from 2020-2021. More than 60% of what we throw away still heads to the landfill.

For more detailed information on the waste diversion efforts in 2020-2021, see our Fiscal Year 2021 Waste Summary Report. If you have ideas on how to increase our waste diversion on campus, reach out to zerowaste@cofc.edu!
